Happy Friday!

Being in an open office, one has no choice but to eavesdrop!  This morning, I overheard coworkers talking about where old `sayings` came from and something about how one saying came from the circus.

Having a few minutes to spare, I decided to look up a few sayings out of curiosity. Scrolling through the long list, I hit the `P’s` and got to Potluck. Seeing our office has a potluck function every two weeks (and this week is potluck week), I thought it would be good to read.

POT LUCK: In the past all kinds of food went into a big pot for cooking. If you sat down to a meal with a family you often had to take ‘pot luck’ and could never be quite sure what you would be served. REF: http://www.localhistories.org/sayings.html

Very interesting!

William Joseph Potluck Club

The staff at WJ are a hungry, hungry group.  Never has there been a workplace so obsessed with food.

We have true foodies who love expensive dinners and nice wine and will go on for hours (yes hours) about the slow food movement. We have junk food junkies who keep the candy shop below our Calgary office in business.  We have some staff who are such regulars at the breakfast place nearby that the owners children send us thank you cards for allowing them to attend college. We also have local food mavens who always know what’s new and cool.  We talk about food, we eat a lot of food, we whine when we don’t have food. So, to attempt to satisfy our urges, we started Potluck Club.

The first rule of Potluck Club is not to talk about Potluck Club. Clearly by writing this blog I’m breaking that rule.  But Potluck Club is so great I just wanna share it with the world.

Here’s how it works.  The WJ staff is split into teams.  Let me introduce the Potluck Club teams so that you can start to cheer on your favorite!

Team Melting Pot -we  know, we know, our team name is lame, wait for a new one soon

Team Three Account Managers and a Baby- poor designer who got stuck with three account managers – you can guess how many decisions he gets to make in the process!

Team Exploding Ginger Maidens – weird, we agree.  However, for a team made up of our resident pyrotechnician (he’s legit, has a license, gets paid to blow stuff up), our favorite red-headed designer, and two lovely female members of staff with no obvious features or personality quirks to make fun of, it makes sense.

And last but not least… Team New Kids on the Potluck (NKOTP) – when we hired a new gaggle of staff we showed no mercy, put them on a team together, and made it their turn that week!  It’s sink or swim in Potluck Club.

Every second Friday it is the job of one of these teams to provide a lunch-time spread of deliciousness for the hungry masses.  This is no mean feat by the way.  In case you think “hey, that’s no problem, I could bust out that kinda cookin’ anyday” you should probably know that you have a microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker to work with.  We have no stove and no oven.  To be honest we don’t even have enough plates or forks because our staff is growing so quickly (in number as well as waist size due to Potluck Club).

Despite these trials and tribulations, Potluck Club has become a rousing success and a much-anticipated bi-weekly event.  We’ve been through one full cycle and each team has solidly one-upped the previous teams (in addition to liking food we apparently have an atmosphere of hyper-competitivity). The end result is food, fun and fellowship in the WJ offices.  Some of the side-effects are weight gain and friday afternoon sleepiness.

We did not manage to capture images of our first few Potluck Club events, but here are some images of the glorious offerings put together by Team Melting Pot.   We look forward to what Team Three Account Managers and a Baby will  have for us next week.

Stayed tuned, and if you’re ever thinking of dropping by the offices…the tastiest time is friday at 12:15ish!

Bon Appetit!
